Albert Park is a trendy haven for residents who enjoy open spaces and a healthy lifestyle. Along with its beachside position on Port Phillip Bay, it’s most prominent feature, Albert Park Lake, is a popular recreation point for walking, jogging, cycling and sailing. The Park is managed by Parks Victoria and is a well known Melbourne icon. Since 1996, Albert Park and Albert Park Lake has been host to the Australian Grand Prix, among mixed reactions from residents. The suburb is characterised by its wide tree-lined streets, heritage buildings and outdoor cafes. Within Albert Park, St Vincent’s Garden is a true delight of nature and as such is registered with the National Trust. Albert Park is also home to Bob Jane Stadium, the home ground of South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Premier League. The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, which hosted the 2006 Commonwealth Games is also a popular leisure centre for many residents. A large percentage of homes in Albert Park are semi-detached, row or terrace houses and town houses. Trams run along Victoria Street making the beach and CBD easily accessible for all residents.

Balaclava - 3183

Balaclava is home to a diverse mix of residents and dwellings alike. It is one of Melbourne’s Orthodox Jewish Communities and as such boasts a number of kosher restaurants and shops. Dwellings range from Victorian, Edwardian and 70s flats to art deco apartments and temples. Many sub-tropical palm trees line the streets along with public art and a variety of stores. The main shopping strip is Carlisle Street has a good selection of cafes where many residents meet, especially on Saturday mornings. Balaclava is well serviced by public transport with a railway station and major tram and bus routes running throughout the suburb. Over 60% of all dwellings are flats or apartments and the suburb is popular among families without children.

Elwood - 3184

Located right on Port Phillip Bay, Elwood is a popular suburb among singles, couples and retirees. Dwellings are a mix of Edwardian, Victorian mansions, Interwar and Art Deco architecture and many streets are lined by London Plane trees. Elwood is a highly built up suburb with just under 70% of all dwellings flats, units or apartments and apart from the foreshore has relatively little open spaces. The main shopping strip is Elwood Village on Ormond Road which is popular with residents for its restaurants and cafes.  A number of schools are located within the suburb although public transport is scarce with only bus services; however it is walking distance to St Kilda. The Bayside bike trail runs through the suburb along the beautiful foreshore area which is also popular for roller skating and rollerblading.

Middle Park - 3206

Located between Port Phillip Bay and Albert Park Lake, Middle Park provides a wonderful example of preserved terrace houses and Victorian architecture. This beach side suburb is part of a strict heritage-conservation area and, compared to neighbouring St Kilda, has very few modern developments. Building restrictions and unique homes have helped drive up real estate prices in Middle Park. The suburb is serviced by the light rail which runs along Canterbury Road. The main shopping strip, Armstrong Street, fits perfectly into the heritage style of the suburb with a village like atmosphere consisting of small exclusive deli’s and cafes. A high percentage of residents in Middle Park are couples without children and over 80% of its population live in semi-detached, row and terrace houses or flats and apartments.

Over the past 20 years, Port Melbourne’s demographics have changed from one of the poorest to one of Melbourne’s wealthiest suburbs. Originally Melbourne’s main transport hub and manufacturing district, many of these services have since moved to the inner city area making way for residential dwellings and creating a popular suburb for singles and families alike. Dwellings range from single-fronted Victorian timber worker's cottages to new apartments and housing developments; with over 80% semi-detached or terrace houses and flats, units or apartments. Due to its rich history, Port Melbourne has a diverse mix of open parklands, beaches, industrial and port areas and exclusive apartments. The main shopping strip is Bay Street which is known for its restaurants, cafes, gift shops and boutique fashion outlets. Both cargo and passenger vessels still dock in Port Melbourne at Station Pier – which has been redeveloped to include apartment complexes and medium-density housing known as Beacon Cove. The suburb is serviced by a light rail and buses, with easy access to the western suburbs via the West Gate Bridge. Port Melbourne also includes Fishermen's Bend, Garden City, Montague and Beacon Cove.

Home to the prestigious Rippon Lea Estate, the suburb its self is one of Melbourne’s smallest covering only .3km2 – with a small population to match. The Estate is included on Australia’s National Heritage List and includes an urban mansion, large garden and outbuildings. The area surrounding the estate is made up of predominately semi-detached or terrace houses and flats, units and apartments. Ripponlea has a relatively small amount of separate housing. The main shopping strip is along Glen Eira Road with a number of high end restaurants and reception centres. Ripponlea is serviced by a train station and tram routes.

South Melbourne has a mix of commercial and residential buildings including newly renovated Victorian cottages and terraces. The suburb has an abundance of restaurants, cafes and pubs making it popular among young professionals, young families, singles and couples.

St Kilda – 3182

St Kilda is one of Melbourne’s most popular and trendiest suburbs. There is never a dull moment in St Kilda with festivals, street stalls, cafes, restaurants, theatres, music venues and historical sites, including Luna Park, drawing people from all over Melbourne on any given day. The main shopping and meeting places in St Kilda are Fitzroy and Acland Streets. Both provide a diverse range of eateries representing a mix of cultures and shopping. At present there are plans for a major redevelopment known as the Triangle Site, which encompasses the area adjacent to the Palais Theatre. St Kilda beach is a popular tourist spot, especially during the summer months and is home to the historical St Kilda Pier. St Kilda is a particularly large suburb and features an eclectic mix of dwellings including Art Deco, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, interjected with high density housing. Many of St Kilda’s original mansions have been replaced by expensive apartments and units with over 77% of all residents living in some form of high density dwelling. However, St Kilda still has lovely tree-lined streets and many public gardens including Catani Gardens, O’Donnell Gardens, Alfred Square and Albert Park. St Kilda is well serviced by public transport including trams and the light rail.

St Kilda East - 3183

St Kilda East is a high density suburb, dominated by 1960s flats, and is home to many of Melbourne’s Jewish Community. Compared to its neighbouring St Kilda, the suburb is quiet and largely residential. St Kilda East does contain some preserved heritage Edwardian cottages and Victorian terrace housing however, over 65% of all dwellings are flats, units or apartments. The suburb does not have much open parkland, however the one park, Alma Park, contains sporting facilities, bike paths and a native garden. It is a popular suburb for those who love the beach and city life, but are unable to get into the property market of surrounding suburbs. St Kilda East has a number of public transport options throughout with major tram routes, train stations and buses.

Windsor attracts a young population with over half its residents aged between 20 and 39 years and approximately 54% comprising of couples without children. Housing within Windsor is a mix of medium density apartments, terrace houses, high rise public housing and semi detached cottages. A high proportion of these dwellings are rented and with a campus of Swinburne University located in the suburb, Windsor is popular among students. Windsor is located at the more bohemian end of Melbourne’s popular and famous Chapel Street and a number of pubs and lower end restaurants are popular among residents of Windsor. With a number of public transport options and its close proximity to Melbourne’s CBD, Windsor is a more affordable option for many residents than the surrounding Toorak or South Yarra.
